Constant Contact has evolved from an email marketing company to an online marketing powerhouse, serving the needs of more than 500,000 small businesses globally. The company’s tremendous growth has paralleled its expanding employee base, with the headcount across all seven office locations totaling more than 1,000 employees. Amid such dynamic growth, Constant Contact’s human resources team consistently fine-tunes its comprehensive employee program that empowers all employees to serve as recruiters, fuel innovation, and develop leadership skills, ultimately fostering a diverse employee base that drives customer success in a work hard/play hard environment.

Our recruitment process is focused on attracting the “best of the best,” no easy feat given the company has doubled in size over the past few years. To amplify the flow of qualified candidates, the HR team launched a new Constant Contact Careers Site in 2012, complete with advanced search capabilities and engaging content, providing candidates with a rich and informative online experience. Supporting the HR team’s belief that everyone’s a recruiter, in 2012 we implemented creative technology solutions enabling employees to use their personal social networks to easily reach out to their connections, boosting referrals and recruiting candidates.

Once people are on the Constant Contact team, they benefit from the many ways we endeavor to keep them engaged and motivated. Our grassroots approach to recognizing and rewarding employees reflects the belief that employee recognition should come from all directions — including your managers, your teams, and your peers.

Performance awards range from spot bonuses to sales recognition trips. Awards based on tenure include everything from customized Converse All-Star sneakers to a one month sabbatical. Monthly "WOW" and step-up awards recognize significant employee accomplishments. The company also celebrates employees in a variety of ways including: free parking passes, gift cards, and a weekly "beer cart."

The HR team listens to employee voices and we continually solicit feedback through quarterly Employee Engagement ‘Pulse’ surveys, focus groups, and performance reviews. Effective internal communication works both ways, so along with the many ways we encourage feedback, we also maintain a high level of transparency with our employees. Good ideas come from everyone, as evidenced by our successful Innovation Jams, which give all employees the opportunity to build teams and propose a business innovation, with the potential for their ideas to be brought to fruition. In addition to ongoing career coaching for employees from entry-level to executive level, the company offers a “Program on Business and Strategy,” in which cross-departmental teams of select middle management make proposals that the business acts upon. This program has had a positive impact on leadership development and retention and the company has added new services and products as a result of these proposals.

The targeted and innovative efforts of the Constant Contact HR team has created a rewarding company culture, evidenced by the fact that half of the company’s job openings are filled by current employees.
