Nomination Title: Angela Drummond, Founder and CEO

Describe for the judges the activities and accomplishments of the nominated executive during the eligibility period (up to 500 words):

Between July 2010 and July 2011, Angela Drummond — Founder and CEO of SiloSmashers — led her company to major contract wins with the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), significantly grew the professional staff, and earned recognition as one of Washington Business Journal’s Top Healthiest Employers in the Greater Washington area. The fact that the company achieved these accomplishments in a difficult economy is significant enough. But more noteworthy is that these accomplishments were realized because Angela Drummond did what so few entrepreneurs ever do in good times or bad:

• She restructured the company, creating specific business units to better compete for emerging federal opportunities in the Departments of Homeland Security (DHS) and DOT, as well as the General Services Administration (GSA) and the EPA. This paid off in contract wins to support; DOT’s Office of Infrastructure on a readiness assessment for Performance-Based Management and Professional Capacity Building for the Federal Highway Administration and the EPA, with a wide range of technical and professional assistance, including security evaluation and remediation, systems and policy development, training, and diversity and Agency promotional support.

• She expanded the company’s leadership, restructured to prepare for future growth and relinquished significant control in bringing on a Chief Technology Officer to provide technological thought leadership and enhance our technology services offerings and quality of services delivery; a Vice President for Human Capital and Competency Development, to provide overall planning, direction and guidance in the development and implementation of the human capital strategy, organization, core competencies, policies, and procedures that directly support the business development strategy and our growth culture; and initiated a search for a Chief Financial Officer— to round out her senior executive team. To help drive success, Angela recognized that the strongest leaders surround themselves with the best and most capable management team. The inability to delegate keeps many entrepreneurs from realizing the growth they dream of. Angela, on the other hand, has grown SiloSmashers by mentoring employees, providing training and professional development opportunities that allow employees to realize their full potential, and most importantly turning over key responsibilities to senior staff.

• She enhanced ongoing programs to promote employee health and wellness — programs that other companies might eliminate as part of austerity measures. A fitness enthusiast herself, Angela has always invested in activities to promote employee physical fitness and a healthy work environment. SiloSmashers’ award-winning Wellness Community fosters a mindset for excellent physical and mental health through a sound program of good nutrition, moderate regular exercise, stress management, and preventive maintenance. Designed for and by employees, the program includes organized walks, fitness outings such as bike rides and volley ball games, and special speakers on a full range of health topics. Flexible schedules and tele-work schedules have been made available to all employees to reduce the stress of living and driving in and around the Washington D.C. area.
