Nomination Title: Natural Body Spa and Shop

Describe for the judges the activities and accomplishments of the nominee during the eligibility period (up to 500 words):

Founded in 1989 and now with 16 spa locations, including Atlanta, North
Carolina, Tennessee, Florida, and Kansas, Natural Body Spa and Shop is a
full-service “green” day spa and we remain committed to our guests, our
employees and our environment.

Natural Body Spa is dedicated to environmental stewardship in each of our spa
locations and in our business and spa practices. The incorporation of green
elements are key components in the planning, building, design of spas and daily
operations as we focus on reducing environmental impact while educating
employees and guests about sustainability and eco-friendly practices. Primary
considerations in decision making include determining what materials could be
purchased refurbished rather than new, and how can we reinvent our systems to
use less water and energy.

Marketing and collateral materials are printed on FSC certified papers, using
only soy or other natural based inks. We reuse corrugated boxes from vendors.
The tissue and paper towels in the spas are environment friendly. We use only
environmentally safe cleaning products. Spa floors are made of recycled
materials and surroundings are created from post consumer materials whenever
possible.

Our 10th Atlanta, GA location, which opened in 2008, was the first Platinum LEED
(Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified spa in the United
States. We incorporated regional building materials into the design of the
location, including service room floors crafted of 50% post-industrial materials
and flooring created from wood reclaimed from a 100 year-old Georgia barn. In
following with practices at all other Natural Body Spa locations, recycling was
used to properly remove all recyclable occupant materials.

Daily, the facility functions at the highest environmental efficiency including
the fundamental role of water conservation using tankless water heaters, Energy
Star washers and dryers, the signature 10TEN alabaster foot basins which use
one-half the amount of water as standard industry basins. Electrical power
offsets using hydro power credits, a renewable power source. LED (Light Emitting
Diodes) light bulbs instituted in the majority of the spa; and in all other
areas, fluorescent lighting is used as a low energy option.

We are a founding member of the Green Spa Network, a not-for-profit trade
association whose purpose is to bring sustainable operating practices to the spa
industry and to promote the natural connections between personal well being,
economic sustainability, and the health of the planet. We have participated in
creating a “sustainability assessment tool” for the day spa and resort industry,
and we share our successful green best practices regularly.

We have partnered with EarthShare, a national non-profit organization that
permits caring employees and workplaces to support hundreds of environmental
charities through giving campaigns for which EarthShare raises and distributes
funds. Reducing our impact on the earth is always at the forefront of our thoughts when
designing a new spa location. When clients visit our Natural Body Spa today,
they are not only taking care of themselves, they are helping us care for the
environment. It's not easier to be green, it's just better. If we don't take
care of the environment, where are we going to live?
