Nomination Title: ProTrials, Inc., Paving The Way For Women In Clinical Trials
1. Describe for the judges the activities and accomplishments of the nominated company during the eligibility period (up to 500 words):
It all started in 1996 with two women veterans of the clinical research industry. Jodi Andrews and Inger Arum, now both working mothers, had a strong conviction they could run a clinical research organization (CRO) better and more efficiently thanks to senior-level staff so they opened ProTrials Research, Inc.
Fast forward to today and ProTrials is a multi-million dollar company with two primary research offices and a network of international test locations. ProTrials distinguishes itself from competitors as one of the few CROs in the country founded, owned and successfully managed by women.
Guided by Andrews’ and Arum’s experience and leadership, ProTrials was the first CRO to manage and monitor a US-based phase III HIV vaccine trial. Today, its reputation for excellence has brought ProTrials even more challenging projects.
Over the past year, ProTrials, Inc. has reached many unique milestones both business-wise and organizationally. These accomplishments include:
• An annual revenue explosion • Ranking as the 7th largest women-owned business in the Silicon Valley • Election to the Women’s Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC) • Qualifying for the Inc. 5000 • Nomination as a “green company” • Adoption of key piece of technology to streamline clinical trials
ProTrials continues to see its revenue jump dramatically – more than doubling in the last few years. Because of this drastic cash influx, this year ProTrials is in the midst of a rapid international expansion – specifically in India and China.
Recently, The Silicon Valley/San Jose Business Journal chose ProTrials as seventh on the area’s Top 50 Women-Owned Businesses for 2008. The ranking lists the areas public and private women-owned companies according to revenue.
In early 2008, ProTrials was nominated to the Women’s Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC), the nation’s largest third-party certifier of its type and a leading advocate of women entrepreneurs as suppliers to corporate America. The designation gives ProTrials the opportunity to be considered for projects or contracts that specifically encourage diversity, particularly within the government at the local, state and Federal levels.
In August 2007, ProTrials achieved a ranking on the Inc. 5000, a list that recognizes the fastest-growing private companies in the United States. The Inc. 5000 ranks companies according to percentage revenue growth from 2003 through 2006.
This past year, ProTrials become a certified Green Business by the city of Mountain View, California and California’s Santa Clara County. These certifications arm the company with strategic marketing advantages that have led to new customers and unique partnerships it would have never had.
In November of 2007, ProTrials began adopting technology to speed up a clinical trial while minimizing the amount of paper it uses for information gathered during a clinical trial. By starting to utilize electronic data capture (EDC) technology, ProTrials is now able to save time and money, while providing clients a better, more efficient service.
As evidenced above, ProTrials is in a unique position both business-wise and organizationally during these tough economic times thanks to its women ownership and leadership.
