Nomination Title: Charmaine McDonald, VP, Managing Director, McKesson UK
1. Describe for the judges the activities and accomplishments of the nominated executive during the eligibility period (up to 500 words):
Charmaine has been working for global Healthcare IT solutions and services specialists McKesson in the UK for the past 6 years and since 2006 has lead the 500 employee organisation as Vice-President, UK Managing Director. Born and educated in Canada, which operates a similar healthcare system to the UK, Charmaine brings to McKesson UK a good understanding of socialised healthcare from her clinical and professional experience as a staff nurse, a Director of Nursing, an Executive Project Manager and more.
In the last year, Charmaine has applied her clinical and professional experience and understanding to develop and drive the McKesson portfolio, evolving existing home-grown solutions and bringing new services and solutions to the UK market from the USA and leading significant developments in supporting National Health Service (NHS) objectives.
In April 2008, Charmaine announced the completion of a successful twelve wave rollout of the NHS Electronic Staff Record (ESR) – the World’s largest integrated HR & Payroll system – delivering HR & Payroll services to the 1.3m NHS staff which accounts for 7 percent of the working population in England and Wales.
As Programme Director of the £400+ million project (c. $700+ million), Charmaine led her team spectacularly and worked cohesively with the NHS and supporting parties to deliver this project on time and on budget with no disruption to staff pay or NHS patient care.
The sheer scale of ESR was unprecedented. Openly communicating with over 586 separate NHS Organisations was key. It was also vital to recognise that the common focus was to provide an integrated system across England and Wales, whilst remaining aware that each NHS organisation had slightly different requirements. Aligning ESR nationally and locally was the challenge. There was no room for error when dealing with staff payroll.
Charmaine overcame this challenge by the use of effective communication and streamlined consistency. Planning was paramount as was the need to remain focussed on the end result. Through the successful implementation of Wave upon Wave of the project, whereby approximately 50 NHS Organisations were added to the system every other month, this consistency could be relied upon across a specialised and trusted staff base with a sophisticated implementation plan.
With a talent for engaging with, motivating and directing a team of highly skilled professionals, Charmaine invoked renowned and unique leadership skills which certainly earned her much respect from the UK team and NHS Organisations to ensure the business objectives of the project were met. Those who worked on the project were all striving to achieve the same goal creating an intensely focussed and highly skilled working environment.
The critical success factor for the project was to ensure minimum disruption to NHS staff. Charmaine was instrumental in managing staff through the change and the replacement of disparate systems by ESR caused no disruption to staff pay or NHS patient care.
Today, Charmaine is leading McKesson UK in advancing the success of its customers and partners, by supporting the business of healthcare; the workforce; and the commissioning of healthcare services with a wide repertoire of IT solutions underpinned by essential IT managed services, shared services and professional services. Working consultatively with healthcare Commissioners (payors) and Providers, McKesson’s evidence-based approach to world class commissioning is providing commissioning bodies with the insight and integrity to make the right choices as to the best use of public services in order to provide personalised healthcare to a diverse population; today and in the future.
