Nomination Title: Stroller Strides Helps Moms Make Strides in Fitness, Motherhood and Life

  • Describe for the judges the activities and accomplishments of the nominated company
during the eligibility period (up to 500 words):

Stroller Strides, the largest and fastest growing exercise program for new moms,
strolls into its sixth anniversary this year with over 600 locations nationwide –
stellar growth for a company that started with one San Diego mom, her newborn
son and a stroller in 2001.

A lifelong fitness enthusiast, Stroller Strides founder Lisa Druxman first
recognized the need for a “mommy-friendly” workout after the birth of her son in 2001.
Wanting to maximize time with her baby, but also needing to get back into pre-pregnancy
shape, she created a series of exercises using power walks, her stroller, exercise
tubing, and the outdoors. Lisa started classes in her neighborhood, and soon
enough, a small business was born. Within a year, Stroller Strides went from one
location with four moms to 12 locations with over 1,000 moms.

Stroller Strides currently boasts more than 20,000 participants and has doubled in
size each year since starting, making it the 17th fastest growing franchise in the
country (Franchise Times Magazine, 2007) and one of the top 25 small companies
to work for (Working Mother Magazine, 2006). The company’s annual revenue is
    more than $1 million.

The 60-minute classes that combine a stroller walk and intervals of body toning
using exercise tubing, the environment and the stroller, provide moms with a fun
and effective way to get fit following pregnancy, an opportunity to bond with their
babies through exercise, and a supportive, social community.

But in the past six years, Stroller Strides has stretched beyond its postnatal
stroller workout program, partnering with several well-known and respected
companies to also offer prenatal fitness classes, free playgroups and clubs for
moms (even those who aren’t Stroller Strides participants), opportunities for
women to become involved in various community service projects, and even its
own stroller. In addition, Lisa Druxman released LEAN MOMMY (Center Street)
this year – a resourceful book incorporating the Stroller Strides workout that
guides new mothers down a healthy postpartum path.

Along with her desire to get back into shape following pregnancy, Druxman started
Stroller Strides so that she could have a career that was challenging and fun, yet
also supportive of motherhood. In addition to creating career opportunities for her
corporate team – who all work more or less from their homes – Druxman also
extends the family-friendly business option to mothers nationwide who choose to
join the Stroller Strides family as a franchise owner or instructor.

“It’s incredible how much Stroller Strides has grown, both in size and in the
opportunities it provides for new moms,” says Druxman, now a mother of two. “The
primary mission of the program will always be to expand healthy resources for new
    mothers across the country.”
