Tell the story about what this nominee achieved (up to 500 words). Focus on specific accomplishments, and relate these accomplishments to past performance or industry norms. Be sure to mention obstacles overcome, innovations or discoveries made, and outcomes:
On July 1, 2009 Dr. Severin Schwan lead the Roche Group in the development of a program to ensure that poor countries would have access to Tamiflu incase of a worldwide Influenza pandemic. The program is called the Tamiflu Reserves Program (TRP), which will produce and store plenty of Tamiflu for countries in need at a reduced price. Once a pandemic is announced by the World Health Organization the Tamiflu reserves will be sent to governments in need. This program gives governments the ability to access the vaccine in case of emergency without spending more than they can afford. The Roche Group and Dr. Schwan are very dedicated to helping others in need, which they clearly show with this generous program.
Roche and Dr. Schwan received a tremendous honor in September when they were rated by the Dow Jones Sustainability Index as the new Super Sector Leader in the Healthcare division. They were also honored by the pan-European Dow Jones STOXX Sustainability Index. This is the sixth consecutive year that Roche has been included in these indexes, but for the first time they are now the leader in healthcare sustainability worldwide. Dr. Schwan noted that commitment to sustainability has made Roche so successful and that this honor drives them to deliver more innovative medicines in the future.
In December, Dr. Severin Schwan announced Roche’s new Cobas 4800 System for lab testing efficiency and molecular diagnostic needs. This new system works by combining diagnostic HPV or gonorrhea tests with polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technology to determine if there are risks for cancer. There are about 14 different genotypes in certain STDs, especially HPV, which put women at great risk of developing cervical cancer. The Cobas 4800 System can detect all of these dangerous genotypes. This new system is revolutionary and necessary for doctors to make sure these genotypes are controlled. It is a simplified software that tests samples, detects ricks and provides the results to prevent cancer from developing. This new 4800 System shows the Roche Group’s dedication to saving lives and helping develop new medical technology.
Dr. Severin Schwan continued to move Roche in the right direction financially in 2009. Total sales for the entire group reached 49.1 billion Swiss francs, which is an increase of about 10% from 2008. Operating Profit before exceptional items increased to over 15 billion Swiss francs (up 14%), which was brought on mostly by the product improvements that were experienced in 2009.
