What better result can an event have than to focus on community issues that align with its business objectives? Sanofi-aventis (S-A) did just that: it created an awards program to top off the launch of AkademiKa – a one of a kind training program in clinical research and development (R&D) for doctors in Turkey and beyond...and furthered its goal to perpetuate its corporate image as a leading global R&D pharmaceutical company.
Turkey is a major medical market for French pharmaceutical giant Sanofi-Aventis (S-A), yet the competition in the sector is daunting. While conducting market research to gain insights into the Turkish market, Sanofi-aventis Turkey discovered an unmet need: standardized training in clinical research. Simply put, there was no activity in drug research and development in Turkey. It would be difficult to grow and to be competitive without this dimension to their business.
S-A set out to create a massive training program topped off by a stunning awards event.
The communication objectives of S-A’s awards program was to reward and motivate clinical researchers and institutions for their successes in clinical R&D – and to create awareness amongst the sector, the general public, and the Turkish government of S-A as a leader in drug development. Ultimately, the event was a fresh approach to stamping S-A’s image with its constituencies.
Never before had such an event taken place in any country in the world where S-A operated. And never has such positive excitement been created in the Turkish pharma sector. The event literally put Turkey on the map in drug development.
Awards were given for innovation and best practices in clinical research. The judges reviewed the clinical research submissions from 22 teams from academia, hospitals and companies. They were scored according to publishability, realization of the first patients to participate in clinical research trials, attendance at educational activities during the training program, and many other factors.
The event itself was a grand affair, particularly for this sector and was attended by nearly 200 people. Multi media was used to present clips of the training, the winners’ activities, statements by leading figures, images from around the world. There was simulcast coverage online and live input from clinicians around Turkey. Print materials solidified the theme of establishing S-A as the leader in clinical R&D in drug development. S-A Turkey’s Country Manager, Olivier Guillaume was the colorful master of ceremony and awards were given by S-A Medical Director Edibe Taylan. Three top awards were given, plus two runner up winners.
Media coverage was especially enthusiastic, with attendance and coverage by the top major Turkish business and medical media, resulting in 33 articles and interviews, reaching more than 1.7 million readers.
As a result of this event, a Turkish university (Ege), who won an award, made a major investment to improve its laboratories, clinics and technical infrastructure having been motivated to be the center of drug research and development in its region. Now, Ege is one of Europe’s most celebrated universities in the field.
AkademiKa® Awards has been singled out by the Turkish health authorities and academicians for its role in stimulating best practices in clinical drug research and development. With its presence in Turkey, the AkademiKA® Awards event spurs the intellectual evolution of the country. In terms of industry and science – in a multitude of sectors - it helps to elevate the country’s business practices to international standards …thus increasing Turkey’s overall credibility.
Due to the success in Turkey, in 2010, the AkademiKA® Awards event is being delivered in Dubai in the name of AkademiKA®International.
