Nomination Title: Perfect water through a perfected science - Australian Innovative Systems Pty Ltd
Tell the story about what this nominated company achieved (up to 500 words). Focus on specific accomplishments, and relate these accomplishments to past performance or industry norms. Be sure to mention obstacles overcome, innovations or discoveries made, and outcomes:
Australian Innovative Systems (AIS) is a manufacturing company specialising in the disinfection of water via electrolysis. With a history spanning 35 years, its products are not only regarded as the best in the world but, in many cases, are world first.
AIS currently employs more than 50 staff throughout its three manufacturing facilities in South East Queensland and exports to more than 50 countries worldwide.
In recent years, AIS research and development activities have focused on a range of eco-efficient products. As a result, chlorine generators AutochlorTM powered by switch mode power supply deliver savings of approximately 60 per cent of electrical power consumption compared to systems powered by traditional EI type transformer and help to achieve significant water savings.
All AIS products are built on strong technology and pioneering spirit - 75 per cent of its products was developed over the last decade, demonstrating the extent to which innovation is now embedded in the company’s DNA.
During that period, our team has delivered four cutting edge innovations:
1. The most advanced anode material produced with a special ceramic-type coating 2. New generation chlorine generators powered by Switch Mode Power Supply (SMPS) for both residential and commercial applications. AIS is the only company to successfully utilize SMPS technology in salt water chlorinators in commercial applications. Further advancement of the hardware enables the use of any source of water within salinity range from 0.2 up to 36 per cent. The equipment senses the amount of salt in the water and automatically adjusts voltage to suit the programmed level of chlorine output. 3. Bi-polar reverse polarity cell assembly design 4. EcolineTM - revolutionary high performance in-line on-site fresh water chlorine generators that represent the company’s greenest and most efficient products.
Using completely new technology, AIS has developed unique low resistance and low activation anode material. In combination with a specially designed power supply and electrolytic cell, this innovation allows the generation of a sufficient amount of chlorine in the fresh water with total dissolved solids of 50ppm or more. This technology set another benchmark for the industry.
Apart from the electricity, the fresh water chlorine generator does not require any salt and/or any other chemicals to produce the chlorine. Chlorine is activated from the small amount of natural mineral salts present in the fresh water. This is in-line chlorination technology, where fresh water passes through the cell and the required amount of chlorine is produced from the water itself and diluted immediately into the passing water. Ecoline is an energy efficient technology – only six watts of energy is required for every gram of pure chlorine, compared to traditional 13 watts per gram of chlorine, translating to both energy and cost savings.
This new technology is helping expand the application of AIS’s products outside the swimming pool industry. Potential applications for this unique system include drinking water, reverse osmosis, food processing plants, water features, competition swimming pools, cooling towers, agricultural lagoons, irrigation water, recycled water, grey water, sewerage and waste water.

Provide a brief (up to 100 words) biography about the leader of this nominated company:
AIS was acquired in 1992 by Kerry Gosse, who purchased the small manufacturer as a way of pursuing his passion in the pool industry. Kerry had the ambition to grow the small domestic manufacturer into a competitive international market leader in the salt-water pool treatment industry by focusing on three main areas: Switch Mode Technology, Commercial Chlorinator Market Dominance and Anode Coating Innovation.
Kerry is the driving force behind the company's research and development. He is a leader with a refined sense of strategy and an in-depth technical knowledge. His entrepreneurial spirit earned him a Regional Finalist position In 2006 Entrepreneur of the Year (EOY) awards.
