Our Strategies in Asia: - A single cause with focus on “Learn” – education, to leverage the synergy of resources; - Develop tailored, innovative programs to meet local needs; and - Forge partnership with external stakeholders.
P&G’s diverse CSR programs have reached 10+ countries across Asia. In 2008, P&G’s donations in Asia amounted to over US$15 million, while our initiatives have reached over 18 million children across 10+ Asian countries through education, clearer sanitation and better living standards. Our goal for 2012 is to reach out to least 75 million children cumulatively.
Highlights of our Tailored, Innovative Social Responsibility Programs
A. Delivering safe drinking water to help needy to “Live” P&G’s Children’s Safe Drinking Water Program provides safe drinking water to developing Asian countries through its PUR water-purifying technology, aiming to save the children from illness and death. Earlier this year, P&G provided over 2 million packets of PUR to survivors of Cyclone Nargis in Myanmar.
B. Helping children pursue their dreams through “Learn” In China, “Project Hope School” program has donated accumulatively US$7 million to build 170 Hope Schools in 10,000 poverty-stricken villages across China, the largest number among MNCs in China, benefiting over 100,000 children. In 2008, P&G built the first mobile Hope School only 12 days after the tragic Sichuan earthquake hit, enabling more than 1,000 students to continue with their education.
In India, P&G partners with Child Rights and You to launch “Shiksha”, which has extended the education path to over 87,000 underprivileged children, through a record breaking donation of around US$1.6 million.
In Malaysia, “Open Minds” has contributed over US$1.1 million funds to help build more 60 schools and centers nationwide to assist children who are intellectually-challenged or suffering from various diseases. In the Philippines, the “3-pid Gift of Education” has helped to send over 34,000 children to schools by providing them with a complete set of school supplies.
In Singapore, P&G partners with World Vision Singapore to organize “Beyond Border” program to improve the lives of underprivileged children in Asia. More than 33,000 Singaporean students have helped to raise funds for over 70,000 children in Laos, Cambodia, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Myanmar. The program also helps instill in the Singaporean children a civic consciousness that goes Beyond Borders.
C. Teaching self-esteem and life-skills, enabling children to “Thrive” In Korea, P&G together with the Community Chest, initiated “Dreaming Together for the Future”, a self-development and sensibility-development program to teach handicapped children self-confidence and equip them with necessary social skills. Vocational training, donation of books and library facilities, scholarships, and art, sport and music activities were provided.
Critical Success Factors
A. Innovative Programs Tailored to Local Needs Innovation is P&G’s lifeblood; we embed innovation in our corporate social responsibility programs. For instance, in China, to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Project Hope, P&G developed a three-year initiative – “Happy Sports Campaign 2008”, “Happy Music Campaign 2009” and “Happy Health Campaign 2010” to enhance and bring the program to a new level. This year, the music campaign has reached the needy children in the Sichuan Earthquake region, helping their psychological and spiritual healing. In Malaysia, we created a charity album supported by Malaysian artists, and organized an Open Minds charity concert, attended by the King and Queen of Malaysia, to raise fund.
B. Strategic Approach P&G has adopted a highly strategic approach of embracing a single cause with focus on “Learn”, allowing synergy of resources, while the execution of the programs are varied and tailored to local needs. Moreover, our partnership with external stakeholders and support from employee volunteering has helped to enhance the success and sustainability of the programs.
External Recognition The external recognition received is the best testimony of the success of P&G Asia’s social responsibility initiatives: - P&G Asia – Silver Award in 2009 Global CSR Summit - P&G China – Philanthropy Award in 2008, presented by China’s Ministry of Civil Affairs - P&G Korea – Prime Minister’s Ministry of Environment Citation 2009
