Nomination Category: Corporate Communications, Investor Relations, & Public Relations Categories Nomination Sub Category: Best Communications Team
Nomination Title: HBOS Group Communications
1. Tell the story about what this nominated team achieved (up to 500 words). Focus on specific accomplishments, and relate these accomplishments to past performance or industry norms. Be sure to mention obstacles overcome, innovations or discoveries made, and outcomes:
HBOS Group Communications has an unrivalled reputation. Having achieved over £157.7 million in advertising value equivalent (AVE) in 2007, up from £71.1 million in 2006, the HBOS team maintain the key objective of staying ahead of the crowd in a busy media agenda.
The team's holistic approach to communications includes media relations, internal communications, group economics (who provide research and support for the wider team), corporate social responsibility and government relations. Based across multiple sites (Halifax, Edinburgh and London), the team covers multiple brands (Halifax, Bank of Scotland, Birmingham Midshires, HBOS). The bank's unique history means there are many stakeholder groups and media strands that require tailored well-informed communications.
Objectives:
• Building and maintaining the HBOS brands whilst raising awareness of the product range and services. • Be first point of call for Government and journalists on housing issues. • Leverage HBOS's position (and HBOS brands) in the housing, banking, savings and investment markets to benefit customers by influencing legislation and leading the way in clarity, transparency and consumer rights. • Develop consumer champion mantle enjoyed by Halifax in the home owning, buying and moving market.
Tactics:
In addition to providing regular economic research products and informative housing indices, the HBOS strategy of campaigning around key issues means it maintains a high media profile and ensures future media coverage.
In February 2007, through the high profile Dormant Accounts campaign, HBOS became the first major bank to launch such a major reunification campaign and generated articles in almost every national newspaper and extensive broadcast coverage.
By providing strategic advice to the business, the team have initiated and been the catalyst for such campaigns as changing business product stationary to feature summary boxes, changing the training and development focus (Halifax Estate Agents) and encouraging the creation of consumer advice sites i.e. www.buyingyourfirsthome.co.uk (mortgages).
HBOS continues to campaign on important consumer housing issues including council tax, inheritance tax and stamp duty. Each campaign has been backed by detailed research and press material, as well as sustained parliamentary lobbying. HBOS research has been mentioned in parliamentary debate, in Early Day Motions and has been instrumental in the argument for raising the basic stamp duty threshold, now raised twice during this period.
Results:
Halifax remains the number one housing market and personal finance commentator by any measure and the HBOS brands continue to benefit from this.
• Competitor benchmarking: Press Watch evaluation shows clear blue water between HBOS and the other four major high street banks. • Independent journalist polls: Mori PFJ and City & Business journalist surveys show HBOS as the number one financial press office (first in Mori for the last four years for personal finance and for five years in city and business). • AVE totalled £228.8 million over the past two years.
The majority of HBOS research is performed in-house by either group economists or the business area (e.g. Banking). Subsequently, the budget for much of the press material and research produced is negligible and gives a very strong performance.
