1. Tell the story about what this nominated company achieved in the past year (up to 500 words). Focus on specific accomplishments, and relate these accomplishments to past performance or industry norms. Be sure to mention obstacles overcome, innovations or discoveries made, and outcomes:
Since 1997, Phoenix Park Gas Processors Limited (PPGPL) has tied safety excellence by employees to a major national project. The company’s safety record is determined by no lost time incident in a calendar year. Each year that the company achieves this milestone, a gift worth $50,000 US is given to the people of Trinidad and Tobago. Gifts over the past seven years were intended for the national good and represented contributions to health, education, safety, the environment and the socially disadvantaged.
For PPGPL’s 13 year safety record and its 15th anniversary the company presented a special Gift to the Nation valued at $250,000 US. The Project entitled H.O.M.E.S., (Housing Our Most Exposed Siblings), is a partnership with Habitat for Humanity Trinidad and Tobago whereby PPGPL will provide funding and “sweat equity” for the construction of houses for needy families in the Central part of the country. Through this effort approximately 20 needy families will be able to own decent, affordable homes by September 2007. The project was developed based on the growing need for affordable housing in Trinidad and Tobago. According to The Ministry of Housing’s statistics for 1995-2005 from Trinidad & Tobago's total population of 1,176, 000 persons 45,115 low income families have applied for government housing which is based on a lottery system. In every region within Trinidad and Tobago, persons working for $318 US to $476 US monthly account for the largest income group of applicants. Despite the fact that government housing caters for persons within the middle to low income brackets, there are many who cannot even afford these houses as they are unable to qualify for a mortgage. HFHTT therefore fills the void that exists for these families that are disadvantaged socially and economically.
In recognition of the poor living conditions facing many in our communities and the negative societal impact of this reality, Phoenix Park Gas Processors Limited responded positively to Habitat for Humanity’s TT request for corporate assistance. The company agreed to provide funding to HFHTT to construct houses in its fence line enabling families working for less than $556 US monthly or those with irregular incomes to qualify for houses.
In July 2006, PPGPL launched the HOMES project with the handing over a cheque of $250,000 US to Habitat for Humanity. Since its formation in 1996, it was the largest corporate donation received from a Trinidad and Tobago company and sowed the seeds for greater private sector support in the future.
In January 2007, the sod was turned to start construction of the first house under the HOMES project. Since the project started, other large companies have pledged their support of Habitat and are embarking on similar projects to build communities one house at a time.
