Nomination Sub Category: Best Product Development Organization

Nomination Title: Telelogic Development Team Reinvents Requirements Management for Worldwide Extended Teams

   1. Tell the story about what this nominated organization/department achieved in the past year (up to 500 words). Focus on specific accomplishments, and relate these accomplishments to past performance or industry norms. Be sure to mention obstacles overcome, innovations or discoveries made, and outcomes:

For enterprise software and systems development, round-the-clock, round-the-world development teams have become the norm.  Whether workers are outsourced, offshore, remote or traveling, the need to keep all parties up-to-date and in-synch with project requirements is greater than ever.

To remain the market-share and technical leader for requirements management tools, Telelogic needed to advance the capabilities of Telelogic DOORS to better support extended development teams.  The goal was to ensure that up-to-the-minute requirements data would be available to everyone, anywhere, at any time, while providing high-performance access even over low-bandwidth connections.

But this would be no simple task.  Telelogic DOORS is used by more than 120,000 users at more than 1,000 companies around the world; they could not be asked to abandon their technology investments, retrain employees or migrate from one platform to another.

The solution was Telelogic DOORS XT - an entirely new product, supporting and

complementing the market-leading concepts of Telelogic DOORS.  Released in March 2005, DOORS XT harnesses an entirely new three-tier architecture using Oracle as the database and WebLogic as an application server, providing a fast, powerful solution for distributed development projects.

The three-tier architecture using Oracle provides superior scalability and 24x7 database connectivity and backup.

The WebLogic application server can manage hundreds or thousands of concurrent users and can be clustered. The application server reduces the volume of traffic on the network so users can operate at great distances or over poor networks.

This combination supports high performance on low-bandwidth access to a

scalable, central, real-time requirements database from anywhere in the world, at any time.  Finally, all users can follow a single set of updated requirements.

The user interface combines the best of familiar environments like studio-style interfaces and web browsers, making it accessible to a wide-spectrum of stakeholders.  Online help and e-learning courses remove the traditional expense (and barrier) of onsite training classes.

The DOORS XT client is installed and updated via automatic downloads from the server, eliminating the need for a work stoppage.  This greatly simplifies and reduces the cost of administration when deploying in large numbers and across multiple sites.  Interoperability with DOORS and other existing software investments keeps costs low.  A programmable interface which supports JavaScript and C#, enables users to integrate DOORS XT with in-house applications. An XML import/export capability supports the exchange of requirements data with other tools.

While developing DOORS XT, parallel changes had to be made in Telelogic DOORS

to ensure full communications and interoperability even while the DOORS product line evolved.  In addition, a programmable interface (API) had to be developed so customers could extend or customize DOORS XT to their needs, standards and preferences.  This API works with common industry-standard languages, such as C#, eliminating the need to learn custom scripting languages.

DOORS XT is the first and only tool to address the needs of real-time global development.  The work of the DOORS development team has continually made

Telelogic the leading solution for enterprise requirements management.
