CCL Label GmbH Introduces "WASH OFF" Pressure-Sensitive Labels A New Era in Labeling Reusable Bottles
Until now, labels used for returnable bottle systems have been limited to paper-based materials combined with waterborne casein-based glue.
Pressure-sensitive film labels could not be used on returnable bottles because they were not removable in standard industrial bottle washing systems.
This was a considerable drawback for marketers, because new, innovative labeling techniques – such as the “No Label Look” – could not be used for products sold in returnable bottles. This was especially a dilemma for brands marketed in Canada and throughout Europe, where returnable glass bottle systems are the predominant form of packaging for many beer and beverage products.
Returnable bottles have to be treated in an industrial bottle washer for removal of contamination and, of course, the label, before refilling. For normal paper-based wet glue labels found on returnable bottles, this is done using a combination of washing liquid, temperature and physical separation forces. The same washing apparatus does not work for the removal of pressure sensitive labels because of the strong adhesion to the glass surface.
That’s no longer the case, thanks to the WASH OFF Label-System developed by CCL Label GmbH. With WASH OFF pressure-sensitive labels, the label can now be easily removed in a standard bottle washing system without any remaining residue on the bottle. Due to the unique properties of the adhesive, the film label is no longer sticky and can be removed from the bottle washer as easily as a paper-based label. Because WASH OFF labeled bottles can now run through standard washing systems just as easily as paper-based labels, this has opened the door for marketers of beverages in returnable systems to take advantage of the latest pressure-sensitive label design and decorating options.
With paper-based labels, marketers were somewhat limited in what could be achieved on the label. WASH OFF represents a major new advantage for glass bottle products that come in returnable systems. Two global beer brands – Carlsberg and Heineken – have already adopted CCL Label’s WASH OFF labels for their returnable glass bottle products.
