Nomination Category: Company, Office & Product Awards Categories

Nomination Sub Category: Best Corporate Social Responsibility Program

Nomination Title: Community Investment Program - Sustainability In Action

   1. Tell the story about what this nominated company achieved in the past year (up to 500 words). Focus on specific accomplishments, and relate these accomplishments to past performance or industry norms. Be sure to mention obstacles overcome, innovations or discoveries made, and outcomes:

As a producer of one of the world’s most sustainable materials, Alcan believes it has a particular responsibility to be a world leader in promoting

sustainability as a business management concept.  Since its Community Investment Program is a high-profile expression of the company’s values to the

outside world, Alcan adopted sustainability as the platform for its corporate Community Investment Program (CIP) in 2003.  Today, partnerships under the CIP are selected according to the extent to which they integrate the economic, social, and environmental dimensions of sustainability.

To demonstrate its new approach to corporate giving, Alcan adopted three “signature” programs: the US$1-million Alcan Prize for Sustainability,

Alcan Builds on Recycling with Habitat for Humanity, and the PLUS Network with the International Centre for Sustainable Cities.  These programs are helping Alcan build relationships with the international NGO community, underscoring Alcan’s conviction that all sectors of society must work together to achieve the goals of sustainability.

To date, the Alcan Prize for Sustainability has been won by the Forest Stewardship Council, Germany (2004) and the Aga Khan Planning and Building Services (AKPBS), Pakistan (2005).  The Alcan Prize is managed independently by the International Business Leaders Forum (IBLF) and awarded each year to not-for-profit, non-governmental, and civil society organizations, working to make our world a better place.  Alcan has made a nine-year commitment to this program in its first cycle.

The Paris-based Aga Khan Foundation matched the US$1-million prize to AKPBS, acknowledging that the prize refocused international attention on the urgent need in Pakistan to rebuild earthquake-devastated communities and develop more sustainable villages for the future.

The Alcan Prize for Sustainability also granted 12 bursaries to finalists internationally. These US$15,000 Alcan Grants are awarded at the

discretion of the Adjudication Panel and are redeemable for a senior staff member to earn a Post Graduate Certificate in Cross Sector Partnership from

Cambridge University.

In its first year, the Alcan Builds on Recycling initiative, through a partnership with all Canadian Habitat for Humanity affiliates, built two houses

in two cities in Canada – Sechelt (B.C.) and Toronto (ON).  Alcan calculates the winners on the basis of total cans recycled annually by the affiliates and cans recycled per capita (based on population).  In 2006, this initiative will award three homes to the top recycling affiliates.

Homeowners have seen their lives transformed, becoming stronger members of society and making a positive difference in their communities.

The PLUS Network is a peer learning network of up to 30 cities around the world that share experiences, expertise, and tools to undertake long-term planning for urban sustainability.

The PLUS Network has determined that the consequences of decisions based on typical 30-40 year urban planning cycles can change dramatically when the timeline is extended to 60-100 years.  The goal of the Network is to help cities make better decisions with respect to their long-term sustainability.

The early objective is to have 30 cities participating by June, 2006, the 30th Anniversary of UN HABITAT, half of which will be from developing countries.
