1. Tell the story about what this nominated office, plant or agency achieved in the past year (up to 500 words). Focus on specific accomplishments, and relate these accomplishments to past performance or industry norms. Be sure to mention obstacles overcome, innovations or discoveries made, and outcomes:
From office openings and significant new hires, to new and expanding clients
and service innovations, APCO Worldwide (APCO) flourished in 2005.
Today, APCO is a primarily employee owned, global communication company and
one of the largest private consulting firms in the industry. With a
Washington, D.C., headquarters and 25 offices in major business, government
and media centers throughout the Americas, Europe, the Middle East, Africa and
Asia, APCO helps clients address complex policy issues from an integrated
communication and public affairs perspective at the local, regional, national
and international level.
New Offices
Following its 2004 management buyout, APCO leveraged its newly found
independence to expand organically and broaden its global reach. APCO opened
new offices in key markets, including Chicago, New York and Tel Aviv, building
each office from the ground up without acquisition. The result is an
integrated global network that strategizes globally and implements locally,
making APCO a truely “glocal” organization.
This year APCO also established a strategic partnership with the Talal Abu-
Ghazaleh Organization (TAGO), the largest professional services consultancy in
the Arab world. APCO and TAGO work hand-in-hand to solve problems and create
opportunities for international and local clients across the Middle East.
New Hires
For APCO to build upon its successes, it must retain current staff, while
actively recruiting new talent. In 2005 alone, former U.S. Deputy Secretary of
Health and Human Services Bill Pierce; former Canadian Cabinet Minister Sergio
Marchi; former U.S. Ambassador and Assistant Secretary of State Elizabeth
Jones; and special advisor to the British Prime Minister Darren Murphy, have
joined APCO’s team. These new hires join a formidable lineup of former elected
officials, ambassadors, business leaders, journalists, government officials
and political advisors, including Dr. Henry Kissinger, Ambassador Stuart
Eizenstat and Senator Bob Dole. APCO staff at all levels represent the finest
minds in the industry.
New and Expanding Client Work
Some recent successes include: launching the largest ever private-sector
program providing free or low-cost prescription drugs to Americans who need
them; developing and implementing exclusive cutting-edge technology allowing
clients to communicate instantly with opinion elites around the globe;
developing and executing a communication strategy for the world’s leading
athletic brand’s first public corporate responsibility report; assisting with
corporate positioning throughout Europe for one of the world’s leading IT
firms; and raising awareness of rule-of-law issues in Russia and how that will
affect future generations globally.
New Innovations
APCO operates at the nexus of business, government and the media, so it is
only natural that we design a new service for clients which leverages this
expertise. Our business diplomacy team does just that. An elite group of
former diplomats, politicians, journalists and business leaders provide
clients with top-level strategic advice on topics such as economic policy,
energy, corporate responsibility and government relations. Whether working
with foreign governments to secure direct investment, helping multinational
clients open new doors in emerging markets or building strategic relationships
across geographies and industries, APCO’s business diplomacy practice is not
only innovative, but it also gets results.
