Nomination Title: Dassault Systemes
1. Tell the story about what this nominated company achieved in the past year (up to 500 words). Focus on specific accomplishments, and relate these accomplishments to past performance or industry norms. Be sure to mention obstacles overcome, innovations or discoveries made, and outcomes:
Dassault Systemes (DS) product lifecycle management (PLM) software was originally developed for large manufacturers to help them conceptualize, design and manufacture their products quickly, efficiently and cost effectively. PLM helped simplify and automate complex processes such as designing, manufacturing and maintaining an airplane, for example, which required manufacturers to oversee the assembly of more than one million parts.
As companies such as Boeing, Daimler Chrysler and Pratt & Whitney realized significant ROI using PLM technology from Dassault Systemes, the company realized its PLM vision was applicable to all manufacturers, not just multi-billon dollar companies. DS developed a vision, 3D for All, they believed would deliver the benefits of PLM to all companies, regardless of size.
To deliver on its 3D for All vision required deep executive commitment. DS fostered a culture of innovation and collaboration, and made significant R&D expenditures to solve the PLM needs of small/medium businesses. In 2004, the company integrated key acquisitions from the previous years, rounding out its suite of PLM solutions. DS also announced a strategic relationship with Microsoft to deploy its solutions on the more affordable Microsoft platform, which is prevalent in the small/medium manufacturing market. The company also made further investments, purchasing part of Rand Worldwide to more effectively support Rand’s base of small and medium customers around the globe.
One of the largest obstacles the company faced as it delivered solutions for small businesses was the perceived complexity of a PLM implementation. DS focused on building creative best-practices and industry solutions based on its experience with large manufacturers to lend that expertise to small/medium businesses.
Customers have realized the benefits, including Loewen, a Canadian manufacturer of windows and doors. “As a midsize manufacturer with approximately 1,200 employees, we were pleased to receive the type of attention and support from Dassault Systemes that is typically offered to a large scale multi-national corporation,” said Stephen Segal, chief information officer, Loewen. “For Loewen, PLM is a strategic initiative that will result in incremental top line revenue growth while streamlining and improving ongoing operational practices.”
As part of its 3D for All strategy, Dassault Systemes works closely with select universities throughout the world to educate tomorrow’s engineers on PLM technology. In 2004, DS partnered with Purdue University, Texas A&M, Cal State, Hokkaido University, Hong Kong Polytechnic and others to provide the institutions with software and expertise, helping students better understand PLM and product design.
