1. Tell the story about what this nominated company achieved in 2004 (up to 500 words). Focus on specific accomplishments, and relate these accomplishments to past performance or industry norms. Be sure to mention obstacles overcome, innovations or discoveries made, and outcomes:
Historically, consumers have struggled to identify real, quantifiable benefits from taking nutritional supplements. At the same time, companies offering nutritional supplements have had a difficult time providing consumers with a personal measurement on the effectiveness of a healthy lifestyle which also includes daily supplementation...until now.
Pharmanex®, the nutritional supplement division of Nu Skin Enterprises, has introduced a scientifically validated tool to the nutritional supplement industry — the Pharmanex® BioPhotonic Scanner.
Overview of the Pharmanex® BioPhotonic Scanner The Pharmanex® BioPhotonic Scanner is a tool to help consumers obtain a measurement of skin carotenoid levels. The Scanner is the first instrument to reliably measure carotenoid antioxidant levels in the skin, allowing the user to determine if they are consuming an adequate amount of antioxidant-containing nutrients. Previously, this was not possible without drawing a blood sample.
The Pharmanex® BioPhotonic Scanner is portable and easy to use. By simply placing the palm of the hand in front of a low-energy blue light laser, consumers can now obtain an immediate reading of their own antioxidant activity—their Skin Carotenoid Score.
Today there are over 1,300 Scanners in use across the United States and Canada with more being launched around the world.
Solid Science Validates the Pharmanex® BioPhotonic Scanner Pharmanex® worked with University of Utah, Dr. Werner Gellermann, Ph.D and his team to turn the first technology, a large cumbersome machine, into a portable tool that maintained accuracy and consistency, thus enabling Pharmanex® independent distributors to easily use it with consumers. Since that time, the Scanner has been at the center of numerous scientific studies and presentations. Most recently, a clinical study published by the American College of Nutrition showed that the Scanner is a more reliable measurement of detecting carotenoid antioxidant status than conventional blood serum methods.
Impact of the BioScan Program on the U.S. Pharmanex® business Pharmanex® has developed the BioScan Program to leverage the BioPhotonic Scanner technology. This program helps the Pharmanex® independent distributors build their business by securing loyal product consumers. Distributors are able to lease the Scanners and in turn scan potential consumers. Once a person is scanned, the distributor encourages him/her to become a monthly subscriber of the company’s flagship multi-vitamin product, LifePak™. The company also provides a money-back guarantee promising that if a customer’s skin carotenoid score does not improve after taking LifePak® twice per day for 60 days, Pharmanex® will refund your money.
Since the introduction of the Pharmanex® BioScan program, distributors have realized tremendous success in the United States. U.S. results include:
• The Scanner was responsible for a 43% average increase in Pharmanex® revenue for the first three quarters of 2004.
Conclusion The Pharmanex® BioPhotonic Scanner has brought unparalleled innovation, as well as improved credibility to the nutritional supplement category. Consumers now have a real and scientifically validated method to measure the effectiveness of a healthy lifestyle that includes daily supplementation.
