Nomination Category: Products & Product Management Categories
Nomination Sub Category: New Product or Service of the Year - Consumer Products

Nomination Title: FlightScope Xi

1. Tell the story about this nominated product or service (up to 525 words). Describe its function, features, benefits, and performance to date:

The FlightScope Xi is the next generation of launch monitors, weighing in as the smallest and lightest 3D tracking radar for golf in the world. The Xi is fashioned for both indoor and outdoor use, and conducts real-time ball and swing analysis. As the first consumer launch monitor to hit the market, the Xi offers an affordable way for golf amateurs and enthusiasts to improve their game.

FlightScope Xi measures a golf ball’s trajectory from launch to finish. By tracking golf ball carry distance, total distance, roll distance, lateral deviation and ball speed, the Xi is able to provide the same detailed ball flight analysis that consumers expect with professional lessons.

In addition, FlightScope’s Xi has the ability to measure club head speed and smash factor. It collects information throughout the golf club’s path from the top of the shoulder to the follow through. The Xi uses this data to create a “speed profile” which calculates a golfer’s club head speed at different points in time during the swing and measures the force a golfer is applying to the club at those points.

Consumers can use the accompanying FlightScope Skills App on compatible mobile devices to run the Xi. The app allows players to create and play FlightScope Combine challenges or create their own customizable Skills challenges to compete against golfers worldwide and keep track of progression. FlightScope Combine players can also see their rank on a worldwide leader board. With most launch monitors being professional grade commercial units, the Xi is the first of its kind on the consumer market and allows players to elevate their golf practice to a professional level. The Xi features a built-in rechargeable battery, and is Wi-Fi enabled for direct connection to iOS and Android mobile devices. With automatic leveling feet and a rear tilt support handle, the unit requires no fuss during use.

As with all FlightScope launch monitors, the Xi utilizes patented state-of-the-art phased array tracking technology that creates a low level electromagnetic field through which the golf ball and the golf club move. This movement creates a disturbance that is detected and processed to extract position and speed data. FlightScope units are also known for their ease of use and precision. Utilized by top golf instructors, club fitters and equipment manufacturers around the globe, FlightScope operates with unbeatable accuracy.

2. Provide a brief (up to 125 words) biography about the leader(s) of the team that developed this nominated product or service:

The technology behind FlightScope’s Xi is the creation of the company’s mastermind and CEO, Henri Johnson, an inventor and former electronics engineer in the South African defense industry. The company was originally created to manufacture Doppler radar systems for the defense industry to assist in measuring the speed of projectiles, specifically missiles. Realizing the opportunity to expand the application of his technology, Johnson took his brainchild and fashioned it for use in sports. Today

FlightScope is a world leader in the development and manufacturing of 3D Doppler ball tracking monitors, golf radars and launch monitors for various sports. Johnson relocated the FlightScope headquarters to Orlando in 2008, a key location for much of the golf industry
