AECOM (NYSE: ACM) is a Fortune 500 provider of professional services with 2012 annual revenue of $8.2 billion. AECOM’s 45,000 employees serve clients in over 140 countries, covering all seven continents. 

AECOM has advanced our ability to make a profound impact on people’s lives and the environment.   Since 2012, we have focused on and driven results in six key areas centered on sustainable development and social priorities: humanitarian response; ethics and transparency; and strategic partnerships.

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT AND SOCIAL PRIORITIES: HUMANITARIAN RESPONSE

1. Volunteer efforts

AECOM’s 2012 employee and company donations to charitable and philanthropic  organizations globally totaled over US$4 million.

Our employees logged thousands of volunteer hours helping disadvantaged communities through Engineers Without Borders, Water For People, Just a Drop, the Red Cross, the Maasai Wilderness Conservation Trust, the Wounded Warrior Project and others.

2. Promoting environmental sustainability

AECOM is committed to promoting environmental awareness and an appreciation of the planet.

• Worked with Silverstein Properties and the Port Authority of NY and NJ to organize an Earth Day 2012 Educational Fair, featuring a panel of sustainability experts.

• Hosted a Google+ Hangout with leaders from Water for People, Engineers Without Borders and AECOM. The discussion offered unique perspectives on sustaining safe drinking water and the importance of collaborating to help protect the environment.

• Recognized World Water Day with events in over 100 countries.

ETHICS AND TRANSPARENCY

3. Named one of the World’s Most Ethical (WME) Companies

By advancing our active corporate social responsibility initiatives, we have been named to the WME Companies list¬s for three-consecutive years by the Ethisphere Institute.  AECOM accomplishments that were considered during the nomination process included:

• Receiving a Corporate Governance Award from Corporate Secretary magazine.

• Daily global activities during AECOM’s second-annual Ethics Week.

• Publishing a PRWeek piece relating to communicating an organization’s ethics and integrity.

• Guest editing the Q4 issue of Ethisphere magazine (following guest editor GE Chairman and CEO Jeffrey Immelt).

• Producing a feature on trust in business, penned by AECOM’s CEO. 

• Participating in ethics-related events:  Corpedia webinar on ethical culture, Global Ethics Summit, and partnering with GE and Ethisphere to produce the Best Practices in Ethics Communications Workshop and an accompanying Ethics Communications Best Practice Report.

4. Global sustainability report

Our first global sustainability report, “Create. Enhance. Sustain,” was unveiled in 2012 and outlined AECOM’s sustainable goals:
• Help our clients be more successful in the future.
• Operate our systems to reduce waste, gas emissions and consumption to maximize opportunity and innovation.
• Build a culture that understands sustainability as a framework for decision-making.

Our report was produced based on disclosure guidelines of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI).

STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIPS

5. United Nations Global Compact

AECOM formalized our commitment to environmental quality and ethics through the U.N. Global Compact.   As a signatory of the compact, AECOM is committed to aligning our operations and strategies with 10 universally accepted principles that apply to human rights, labor, the environment and anti-corruption principles.

6. Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP)

AECOM volunteers provided data analysis to CDP, an independent, not-for-profit organization that works to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. AECOM also provided communications and visualization techniques in producing the annual CDP report.

AECOM Chairman and Chief Executive Officer John M. Dionisio, a former March of Dimes “Man of the Year,” is a key driver of our CSR efforts.  He recently published an article in Ethisphere magazine titled, “The Centerpiece of Trust: Treating Ethics as a Holistic Value to the Organization,” which highlights AECOM’s strategy and ethical business practices.  Mr. Dionisio also serves on the director boards of The City College of New York and Corinthian Colleges.

Gary Lawrence, vice president and chief sustainability officer, spearheads AECOM’s sustainability efforts by managing extensive resources and skills across the enterprise.  Recently, Mr. Lawrence spoke on an expert panel at the U.N. General Assembly about disaster risk reduction and assessment. He also is a monthly contributor to Environmental Leader magazine.
