Nomination Sub Category: Human Resources Department of the Year

Nomination Title: Flextronics International's Human Resources Department (United States)

Tell the story about what this nominated organization/department achieved since January 1 2010 (up to 500 words). Focus on specific accomplishments, and relate these accomplishments to past performance or industry norms. Be sure to mention obstacles overcome, innovations or discoveries made, and outcomes:

Flextronics HR department is comprised of centers of excellence and human
resource teams that are embedded directly in the business.  This allows HR to
focus on effective people programs that meet the needs of our business and
shareholder expectations.

Flextronics HR had several key accomplishments in 2010.  Of particular note:
•     Expanding Lean manufacturing to the “back office”,
•     Deploying Workday HRIS and HR Shared Services (HRSSC), and
•     Expanding our Corporate Social & Environmental commitment via FlexCares.

In 2010, we initiated an HR Lean Steering Committee in the US.  The committee
identified key processes.  We created end-to-end value stream maps (VSM) of
these processes.  We identified opportunities for Small Group Activities (SGA)
and Kaizen events.  HR team members from all functions participate in
identified activities.  The benefits of HR lean include efficiency, reduced
costs, and an enhanced experience for employees, creating a platform for
improved productivity.  In 2010, the human resource department sponsored 10 US
based Kaizen events.  The cost savings for these events was approximately
$3,623,681.

Branded “HR Connect,” we continued our global implementation of the Workday
HRIS and Flextronics HRSSC.  The US HR team led the design and deployment of
Workday globally.   In addition to completing the US deployment in 2010, we
have deployed Workday in 10 countries thus far, and will complete the global
implementation in 2011.  Workday allows for employee and manager self-service.
This maximizes HR capacity and our focus on core competencies.  Thus far,
Workday has replaced 10 obsolete systems in the US and across the globe.
Workday is currently available to 107,000 employees.

In lieu of expensive outsourcing, the US HR team developed and launched its own
HRSSC.  The HRSSC services employees, houses electronic personnel records, and
accepts work that is transactional in nature.  In 2010, the HRSSC performed
work in several key areas – Staffing, Global Mobility, Total Rewards, Training,
Compliance, Payroll, and HR Operations.   The HRSSC also provides Workday
support, both as a “help desk” and processing staffing transactions for new
hires, promotions and transfers. In 2010, the HRSSC handled an estimated
100,000 calls.  HR Connect allows Flextronics HR Operations to focus on core
competencies and improves our service delivery model.

FlexCares is a corporate initiative under the Flextronics Corporate Social and
Environmental Responsibility (CSER) umbrella, to deploy branded employee
community involvement committees at all North America Flextronics sites.
FlexCares allows each site to hold its own community involvement and employee
recreation events.  FlexCares committees may also include employee recreation
(social events, sports teams, etc) in their focus to encourage positive
employee relations.  FlexCares offers a way for Flextronics employees to
demonstrate their commitment to CSER values, providing a team-based opportunity
at each site to get involved in the community, and connect with co-workers.  We
have also created a FlexCares Activities Sharenet to foster a collaborative
environment and to share best practices.

Flextronics HR is focused on reducing cost, improving productivity and
increasing stakeholder value.  We pride ourselves on contributing to the
business by utilizing technology, embracing constant change and innovation.
