Henry Ford began the famous Ford Motor Company around June of 1903. The first
car produced in that shop was the Model A and they made 1,708 of those in their
first year of business. The Model T was introduced in October 1908 and by the
end of the year over 10,000 Model T’s had been made. Ford Motor Company had its
ups and downs all along the way with money problems and leadership issues. In
the beginning of 1921 they were almost forced to go into bankruptcy but Ford put
his brain to work and came up with different ways to make money where he ended
up with $27 million more than he needed to pay off his debts. Henry’s son Edsel
helped with the company until he unexpectedly died in 1943. Henry then got his
grandson Henry II discharged from the Navy to come assist him. He then became
President of the company in 1945. Henry Ford died in 1947 at the age of 83.
After some more ups and downs, the company would become what we know it today,
the second-largest automobile company in the world.

the best selling vehicle overall for the 27th year in a row

• Records a quarter profit after four consecutive losses – posted a second
quarter profit of $2.3 billion

• 3rd quarter profit of $997 million – the company has made a turn around by
cutting costs and launching new vehicles that people want to buy
• Ford Taurus SHO named 2010 “Urban Car of the Year” and Ford Fusion Hybrid was

Alan Mulally is president and chief executive officer of Ford Motor Company. He
also is a member of the company’s Board of Directors. Prior to joining Ford in
September 2006, Mulally served as executive vice president of The Boeing
Company, and president and chief executive officer of Boeing Commercial
Airplanes. In that role, he was responsible for all of the company’s commercial
airplane programs and related services. Mulally also was a member of the Boeing
Executive Council and served as Boeing’s senior executive in the Pacific Northwest.
Mulally joined Boeing in 1969 and progressed through a number of significant
engineering and program-management assignments, including contributions on the
727, 737, 747, 757 and 767 airplanes.
Throughout his career, Mulally has been recognized for his contributions and
industry leadership, including being named one of “The World’s Most Influential
People” by TIME magazine in their 2009 “TIME 100” issue, “Person of the Year”
for 2006 by Aviation Week magazine and one of “The Best Leaders of 2005” by
BusinessWeek magazine.
Mulally previously served as co-chair of the Washington Competitiveness Council,
and sat on the advisory boards of NASA, the University of Washington, the
University of Kansas, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the U.S. Air
Force Scientific Advisory Board. He is a member of the United States National
Academy of Engineering and a fellow of England’s Royal Academy of Engineering.
He also served as a past president of the American Institute of Aeronautics and
Astronautics (AIAA) and is a former president of its Foundation. Additionally,
Mulally served as a past chairman of the Board of Governors of the Aerospace
Industries Association.
Mulally holds bachelor’s and master’s of science degrees in aeronautical and
astronautical engineering from the University of Kansas, and earned a master’s
in management from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology as a 1982 Alfred P.
Sloan fellow.
A native of Kansas, Mulally is a private pilot and enjoys tennis, golf and reading.
