ADT is the leading electronics security provider in the world and in North America is comprised of approximately 23,000 employees across 220 locations. Club Excellence is ADT’s premier recognition and rewards program. Employees who earn Club Excellence honors win a trip for two to an exciting destination where they enjoy an array of recognition activities, a business meeting, and entertainment. Every team member has the opportunity to earn a spot at Club Excellence by living the ADT Values, serving as great examples to others, and establishing the benchmark for excellence within his or her area of the business. Over 700 people (winners, guests, hosts and staff) make up the Club Excellence experience. Each year, Club Excellence travels to a different destination, and for Club Excellence 2009, hosted January 2010, the winners traveled to an all-inclusive resort in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic.
There are two main objectives to Club Excellence: To recognize and reward top performers and motivate employees to deliver strong results. By communicating criteria for Club Excellence throughout the year, and showcasing the destination, employees are regularly reminded that if they perform their best, they may have the opportunity to join this exclusive trip. Criteria have been built to ensure employees from all areas of the business are eligible. This includes metrics within the different sales organizations (five categories), operations and corporate/support staff. The top statistical winners in each category are recognized at the Club Excellence event as Eagle Award winners, and are awarded medallions to wear during the event to evidence their elite status.
Club Excellence planning begins approximately one year in advance, with several key phases: selecting the destination; aligning selection criteria metrics to reflect the current year’s targets; developing a communications plan; reviewing nominations and selecting winners; and organizing the event and travel logistics.
Like most other organizations, ADT felt an impact from the economic downturn; however, ADT’s leaders unanimously agreed that Club Excellence should not be cancelled as eliminating this program could impact morale and performance. Despite a 20% decrease in budget, survey results indicated the overall experience of Club Excellence was not impacted. This year’s event had a survey response rate of 46%. Of the respondents, 100% were “Extremely Satisfied / Satisfied” with the overall program (compared to 98% for previous Club Excellence event held in Jamaica). One of the main objectives of Club Excellence is to motivate top performers to continue delivering strong results. This year’s event succeeded in that with 94.5% of respondents stating that the opportunity to attend Club Excellence motivates them to perform even better. In addition to being recognized formally in general company communications and during the trip, winners also have the unique opportunity to meet and build relationships with leaders of the organization – all of which attend Club Excellence as “hosts.”
