In 2007, the marketing climate of Boston’s medical community was on the verge of change and new web technologies had not yet been tapped by area competitors. BIDMC found itself in a unique position to adjust its marketing strategies and shift the focus of its Web site towards consumers and the needs of patients and web visitors.
Jaime Lyons, Senior Interactive Producer has worked tirelessly for over a year to create a new Web site for BIDMC. Her creativity, Web design experience, and marketing know-how helped her to orchestrate and see through an intense redesign process from start to finish.
Here are some of the steps Jaime undertook to complete the project: • Leading the effort to engage the help of a cutting-edge Web agency. BIDMC enlisted the help of Big Bad, Inc., Boston-based interactive agency with a specialty in educational institution Web sites. • Discovery- learning the needs of our community. BIDMC performed a series of in-depth discovery meetings, focus groups and user tests. • Forming a Web team within the Marketing department. Jaime formed a team of 5 employees to focus efforts to the new site; the Web Marketing team was born. • Creating a clear organization of content for the new Web site. Months were spent on creating an information architecture (content blueprint) that would allow users to find any content they needed with only a few clicks. • Developing a design that emulates the BIDMC brand. Jaime worked with Big Bad create an inviting design that truly represents BIDMC. • Planning and managing for utilizing Web 2.0 tools and future technologies. Utilizing new technologies was a major component of bringing a new Web site to fruition. Jaime managed all departmental teams, including the Web marketing team, Information systems, outside vendors and the design firm Big Bad, Inc. • Migrating content from the old Web site to the new. Content was restructured to make the most searched information more easily accessible. A Web team of 5 worked day and night to transition content from the old site to the new. Jaime worked alongside her team, often putting in 65-80 hour work weeks. • Hospital-wide participation. Jaime played a fundamental role in choosing and implementing a content management system (CMS) that was comprehensive and intuitive enough for a beginner Web editor, yet flexible enough for a Web designer. Jaime and her team trained all 225 Web editors from around the entire hospital. • Delivering the project on time and to budget. Due to Jaime’s creative and open management style, the project was delivered on time and to budget.
Redesigning this Web site with over 50,000 pages of content was surely a project of great magnitude, one of the largest to ever come from the marketing department at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. Through Jaime Lyons’ leadership, the end result is a Web site that truly represents what BIDMC is: a compassionate, caring place to receive world-class health care.
