Nomination Title: Harris Corporation
Tell the story about what this nominated company achieved since January 1 2008 (up to 500 words). Focus on specific accomplishments, and relate these accomplishments to past performance or industry norms. Be sure to mention obstacles overcome, innovations or discoveries made, and outcomes:
Harris technology does some amazing things – HDTV in the home – satellite communication systems – tactical radios on the ground and at sea – avionics in flight – instant replay for the NFL’s televised games. The range of technology we produce is as diverse as the people creating them. In a world increasingly reliant upon communications and IT capabilities, Harris has become the clear leader in delivering high-reliability solutions to address the most difficult problems.
As a corporation, Harris has established an enviable record of growth over the past five years. In this tough economic climate, our organic revenue growth, excluding the contribution from acquisitions, was a strong 13 percent last fiscal year. Our strong momentum has continued in both the first and second quarters this fiscal year, with increases in revenue year-over-year for both quarters.
Harris has recently expanded our business in to two critical markets – healthcare and cybersecurity. We created our Healthcare Solutions business to bring proprietary IT capabilities—including imaging and digital content management—to hospitals and other healthcare systems to help advance medical treatments, reduce costs, and, ultimately, save patients’ lives. Harris is committed to improving health outcomes through Enterprise Intelligence by assuring critical medical information is delivered with security and privacy to the right person, on the right device at the point of care.
While Cyber and Information Assurance is a new growth initiative for Harris, we’ve been in the business of building multilayer security into our network and information systems offerings for decades. In partnership with the Florida Institute of Technology, we have established the Harris Institute for Assured Information which will focus on developing advanced solutions to help solve the global information security problem. Our Cyber and IA business will pull together the broad and deep cybersecurity and IA capabilities within Harris, combine them with new R&D capabilities at the Institute, and apply these resources to better serve current customers and expanding addressable markets.
The same people that create these amazing solutions also realize that being a trusted neighbor and community asset is a critical component to our business success. Harris has always been a very active participant in the communities where we have facilities, not just as a major employer, but also as a leader in local charities, education and cultural activities. In our fiscal year 2008, Harris and the Harris Foundation (our 501c3 organization) contributed over $3.9 million and our employees volunteered over 65,000 hours to charitable and educational initiatives. Harris and our employees were honored to receive the 2008 Corporate Citizenship Award for Corporate Stewardship from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Business Civic Leadership Center.
At Harris, our employees have the freedom to explore new ideas and work with cutting-edge technology while making an impact in both the local community and the world at large. This unique juxtaposition of doing good in the community while doing well as a business makes us a great overall company.
